Interviews and shows
November 18, 2008 - Phil Smith, KGO AM San Francisco. Phil Smith, Communications Director for Secure World Foundation. Phil was interviewed very briefly via telephone for listeners in the Bay Area. The subject was "space junk." September 1, 2008 - Phil Smith, The Space Show. Communications Director for Secure World Foundation. Discussed mission of SWF and the weaponization and militarization of space. Also discussed both the Chinese and the US ASAT tests, their difference, the world perceptions of them, and more. Other topics addressed included orbital debris and debris mitigation, the United Nations treaties, rogue nations and their policy, space tourism, space commerce, spaceports here and abroad, and US space policy as a function of international opinion of the United States. June 19, 2008 - C. Fred Bergsten, Director, Peterson Institute for International Economics, "Media Conference Call: How to Manage China's Challenge to the Global Economy (Audio)." Though there is no discussion about space, the points raised here compliment the Secure World Founadation's approach on U.S.-China relations. In brief, he talks about how China as a rising economic power has recently been making moves that indicate it is not happy with the current global economic rule sets. He proposes that the U.S. and China work together in a sort of new "G2 co-leadership role" to reshape the global economic rules and fora. According to Brian Weeden, who is a technical consultant to the Secure World Foundation, Bergsten's concept is basically an extension of those discussed by Thomas Barnett in his book The Pentagon's New Map. Specifically, Barnett argues that all the current "rule sets" in the world (like the IMF, World Bank, G8, Security Council) are products of the post-WWII era and might need to be rebuilt to reflect the new world.
